SANO Transportgeraete GmbH is an innovative and successful industrial engineering company located in Lichtenberg near Linz, Austria. The company specializes in the development of mobile, electric stair climbing solutions for the transportation of persons with walking impairments and the back-friendly transport of heavy loads.

Due to some new, technical development concepts, our design competences were required for the further development of the stair climbers. SANO manufactures very high-quality and durable products, so there was no need to redesign the entire product. The focus was on the replaceable battery and the operation of the device.

We worked out how and which details could be optimized together with the customer in several workshops. In this way, we were able to ensure that we and the customer always had the same goals in mind and that our ideas of the development project coincided.

As part of the design revision, we mainly wanted to improve usability to make the device more intuitive. When heavy loads are lifted over steps, the controls must not be distracting under any circumstances; instead, they should support the operator.

In formal terms, the main challenge was to design the new elements in such a way that they form a coherent overall picture with the stair climber, but the change is still clearly visible. Both the battery and the controls were integrated flush into the frame, and existing elements were formally reused.
